"Big time public relations without the big-time retainers."

In between the come-ons, however, is the reality that pay-for-performance (PFP) public relations is coming of age, according to one expert.

"Businesses are struggling in this economy and success in today's world requires business leaders to market in a way they may never have done before," said Marsha Friedman, author of Celebritize Yourself from Warren Publishing, (www.celebritizeyourself.com). "Just as people thought they'd never see people like Bernie Madoff being carted off in handcuffs, there are actually some positive shifts in the business world that are just as unbelievable. Not a myth, pay-for-performance PR - when executed correctly - can surpass the efforts of traditional retainer agencies at a much lower cost."

The advent of PFP PR began in the late 80's and was considered revolutionary at the time, Friedman said.

"It hit with some fanfare with an article in the New York Times, and soon after, other companies opened up with the same approach, but varying degrees of effectiveness," said Friedman, who is also the CEO of EMSI Public Relations, a pay-for-performance agency for nearly the last 20 years. "At the end of the day, whether it is a retainer-based agency or a PFP agency, the results will vary depending on the quality of their work. Just like there are good attorneys and bad attorneys, PR firms are in the client service business, so their effectiveness will always have less to do with their business model than with their capabilities."

One recurring criticism that retainer firms have leveled against pay-for-performance firms is that they lack the strategy component. Friedman says that the PFP model does not eliminate good strategic services. In fact, she believes it actually enhances the focus on strategy.

"When an agency is getting paid on a performance basis, it requires the agency to have a solid strategy, because their work and overhead are on the line with every client engagement," she added. "The bottom line is that the agency needs to inherently understand what the news media wants in order to secure placement. If the agency doesn't approach the news media with ideas and stories that are compelling for their readers, they won't get the placement and won't be able to serve their clients."

Other criticisms revolve around how it is difficult to execute print media campaigns in the PFP model, because the size and scope of the print media is so varied. Friedman says one easy fix is to approach print campaigns with project fees, as opposed to fees for each placement.

"A print campaign can be treated as a unit, with a guarantee on impressions and circulation," she said. "In that way, the full depth and breadth of the print media can be approached, without it winding up being too expensive if it's really effective. If it's not effective enough, the agency can always continue to work until the requisite impressions level has been reached.

The question remains as to whether it is less expensive than retainer firms.

"In can be, however, it's not so much about the expense, but rather, the value," she said. "By mitigating the risk of a client who wants results for the money they spend, PFP is far superior to the ‘best efforts' agreements from retainer firms. Moreover, there is no time clock on a PFP campaign. So a six month engagement across all media can wind up costing thousands less per month than a retainer contract that doesn't guarantee anything except that the agency will have the client's money at the end of the month, regardless of the amount of media they generate."

Diageo, the drinks giant, became the latest major UK company last night, to pull its advertising from the controversial Fox News commentator Glenn Beck's show. Diageo, who makes Guinness and Johnnie Walker, followed a similar move by Waitrose, a major grocer, who stopped advertising on in the time slot of the outspoken television show's host, which airs on the Sky TV platform in Britain. This removal of advertising by both companies has put pressure on Tesco who as of last night still refuses to cancel involvement in the show.

Kellogg's, the famous cereal maker also still promotes its brands during that television show's time slot; however, this may not last as they have stated they are going to be coming to a decision regarding their advertising in the near future. Advertisers pulled their advertising in a show of anger over statements made by Mr. Beck during the course of his television show. This statement was that Barack Obama was a racist and that the U.S. President has a "deep-seated hatred for white people". His comments to that effect incensed the pressure group called ‘Color of Change', who in turn, called for advertisers to "exercise corporate responsibility" and to boycott his show in Britain as well as the United States. Since Mr. Beck's attack on President Obama, more that 60 major US companies which includes Wal-Mart, Campbell's Soups, Capital One and Bank of America have stopped advertising during Mr. Beck's time slot in response to the call.

Waitrose, which is owned by John Lewis Partnership, said yesterday that it had taken action after having received complaints from their customers; though the company declined to state how many complaints they had received. A Waitrose spokeswoman said "This is not a politically motivated act, it was simply listening to customers' views and responding to them" Waitrose has withdrawn all of its advertising from the Fox News Channel effective immediately and for all future television advertising campaigns.

Tesco took its stance saying that their advertising is not a statement of support for or against any content on the channel. As with many other businesses, Tesco buys its advertising space as a package that includes many different channels and time slots. Kellogg's is currently in discussions concerning its advertising and will probably be coming up with a decision in the next few days. They have already said they are aware of the issue and that they are looking at it closely. Eighty-six percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey said they think the United States is still in a recession, with 13 percent saying the nation's economic downturn has ended. According to the survey, 42 percent say the country is in a serious recession, 35 percent call it a moderate recession, and one in 10 characterize it as a mild recession.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, according to one business expert. The practice of not "poaching" - stealing clients or customers from a competitor - used to exist as a gentlemen's agreement among many business people. To do so was, at least, impolite, and at worst, unethical. With conflicting economic indicators, however, all bets are off.

"My definition of unethical is this: Failing to do anything and everything within my power, and without breaking the law, to provide for my loved ones, my employees, and my employees' families," said Don Farrell, author of Ethical Theft, How to Steal Business from Your Competition, from Brio Publishing (www.freshrevenues.com).

When it comes to appropriating new clients, Farrell's advice is simple:

1. Know your competition: List active/subtle market similarities and differences you can build on. What makes you different should always make you a better choice.
2. Make it personal: Show your clients that you are concerned about them, not just their business.
3. Find the facts: Know what their wants and needs are so you can tell them how you will address them.
4. Show your clients the big picture: Map out how you can meet their specific wants/needs and what makes you their best partner to do the job.
5. Ask about the client's processes and timelines: This is the best way to find out who makes the final decisions.
6. Pick and use the right approach: Find out what their personality type is and gear your pitch to that.
7. Create a follow-up plan and follow up sooner than the client expects.
8. Seek to improve: Find out from the client what it would take for you to do better.

According to Farrell, there are times when you won't be able to pirate a customer from your competition. This is the time to start asking the client questions. Ask them what their competitor is supplying that they are not. The answer here is usually service-based: Provide what the client needs better, faster and more personally. Go beyond delivering satisfaction and instead look to deliver what will drive loyalty.

"Create loyalty in your sales staff and you have a recipe for success," he said. "If your competition does not use this tactic, they are primed for you to ‘steal' their best employees. It's in their better interests to work for a better company where they are challenged and rewarded to be their best. Keep and eye out to acquire people you can ultimately trust. Be careful of someone coming to you with your competition's business plan. They will also be capable of doing the same to you."

Farrell believes that loyal employees can extend a genuine loyalty culture to your clients. If they deliver what the clients want, when they want it and always go beyond expectations, companies can successfully steal both staff and business from their competitors - and keep it.

"If businesses did a better job of stealing employees and business from their competition then we, as consumers, would be getting better service," he added.

Now I do agree with Perry Marshall that this gentleman should not resort to selling p remade site templates on his site for a measly 20% commission. For most business owners, just looking at your phone bill can cause panic or dread. Instead of checking line by line for accuracy in the invoice, you probably look at the total, sigh, and write a check. With all the new services available, you need to understand your invoice so you don't get overcharged or billed for something you're not getting.

The FCC requires telephone companies to provide you with clear, plain language in their invoices when they describe their services. However, even then, you may not understand what you are being charged for.

Here is a list of terminology associated with your business telephone bill, your wireless bills, or both.

Access Charge: fees charged by a local phone company for the use of its local network.

Airtime Charges: These are per-minute charges for the time you spend talking on your wireless telephone. Some wireless providers will round fractions of minutes to the next highest one, two, or three minutes.

Billing Increments: A call duration measurement unit expressed in seconds or minutes. Depending on your service provider, some services are measured and billed in sixty-second increments and some may be in durations of six or even ten seconds. For example, if you have one minute billing increments, any call less than 1 minute will be billed as 1 minute.

BTN (Billing Telephone Number): Your main billing telephone number.

Cramming: When a charge is placed on your phone bill that you didn't order or authorize.

Detailed Billing: This service provides detailed information such as date, time, duration, type of call (incoming or outgoing), number called, or calling party, for each call.

Direct Dialing: When a customer is pre-subscribed with a long distance company and makes a call using 1+ the area code (or country code) and the telephone number, without operator assistance or using a dial-around number.

Directory Assistance: Charges for dialing 411 or (area code) 555-1212 for directory assistance calls.

Domestic Call: Any call that originates and terminates within the United States.

Downloading Fees: Fees charged for downloading options offered by your wireless service provider, such as ring tones. If your plan includes Internet access, these are fees for downloading data from the Internet.

E911 Charges: These are Enhanced 911 or E911 service. This lets your wireless telephone automatically transmit your geographic position to emergency responders when you dial 911. Your provider is charged for this and may choose to pass their costs on to you.

Features Charges: Both wireline and wireless telephone companies offer features such as call forwarding, call waiting, voice mail, three-way calling, and caller identification. These services may show up as separate charges on your bill.

FCC (Federal Communications Commission): The United States government agency that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. Established by the Communications Act of 1934, the FCC's jurisdiction includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

Federal Excise Tax: A three percent tax applied only to local service that is billed separately from long distance service. In 2006, the IRS stopped enforcing the toll portion of the tax. The tax still applies to customers who only subscribe to local phone service. Earlier this year H.R 3011 was introduced (Telephone Excise Tax Repeal Act of 2009) to repeal the federal excise tax on communications services.

Interstate Calls: Calls that start in one state and end in another state.

Intrastate Calls: Calls that start and end within the same state.

LDU: Long Distance Usage is the amount of long distance a customer uses.

Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) Billing: When a customer receives their invoice directly from their Local Exchange Carrier (your local phone company).

Local Number Portability (LNP): This allows customers to retain their existing local telephone numbers when switching from one telephone service provider to another. Companies may pass on to customers the fees they are charged. These are fees and not taxes.

Minimum Minute Charge: Some calling plans will have a minimum number of minutes that they bill for a call length. A 10-minute minimum charge would mean that even if you talk less than 10 minutes on a call, you would still be billed for a 10-minute call.

Minimum Monthly Charge: Some long distance calling plans have a minimum monthly charge. This means that if your plan has a $50 monthly minimum, your monthly bill will always be at least $50 even if you have a month where you have only made $25 in calls.

Minimum Usage Charge: A calling plan where you would pay a small fee if your monthly long distance usage is under a certain amount. This is different from a minimum monthly fee.

Monthly Calling Plan Charge: Charges applicable to any monthly calling plan. For example, unlimited long distance calling on your wireline bill or unlimited minutes on your wireless bill.

Operator Assisted Calls: These are charges for any calls that are connected by an operator. Usually, it is more expensive to have an operator help you with a call.

Roaming Charges: Roaming charges require you to pay for using your wireless telephone outside of the "home" service area as defined by your service provider in your service plan or contract. Usually the charges are higher when roaming. In addition to roaming charges, there might be a daily access fee.

SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module): Also known as a "smart card," this is the physical card in a mobile telephone that contains all necessary information for uniquely identifying a subscriber.

Single Bill Fee: This is a fee that the carrier can charge for combining your local and long distance charges onto one bill. This fee is not an FCC charge and some companies waive it.

SLA (Service Level Agreement): Documentation or a contract that details service quality commitments between a carrier and the subscriber.

Slamming: The unauthorized conversion of a customer's long distance phone service from their current carrier to a new long distance carrier. Slamming is illegal.

State & Local Taxes: Taxes that are imposed by state, local, and municipal governments.

Toll Call: Any call, subject to charge, to a destination outside of the local service area of the calling station.

Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS): This is a charge that pays for the relay center to transmit and translate calls for people with hearing or speech disabilities.

Text Messaging: This service allows sending of short messages, usually less than one hundred characters in length. This will either be a flat monthly fee or a per-message fee.

Universal Service Fund (USF): This is a charge on some long distance services to offset a carrier's mandatory payment into the Federal Universal Service Fund, which subsidizes rural, low income, and health and education telecommunications customers. The FCC sets the USF rate every three months. It applies only to state-to-state and international phone calls. The FCC doesn't require this charge to be passed on to customers, and each carrier decides if and how to recover its Universal Service costs. If this line item appears on your bill, it means the carrier has chosen to pass their charges onto you.

You should check your phone bill every month and make an effort to understand the meaning of each item to make sure that you're paying the proper rates for your contract. If you make any changes to your lines, make sure they apply the right charges to the change. If you see something that you don't understand, ask your provider to explain the charge.
